Celebrating over 37 years of independent research

The Medical Technology and Practice Patterns Institute (MTPPI) was initiated at the Institute for Health Policy Analysis at the Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. In July 1986, MTPPI was established as an independent nonprofit entity separate from Georgetown to allow for broad collaboration with the healthcare industry and stakeholders. The mission of the Institute is to conduct research on the clinical and economic implications of innovative healthcare technologies. MTPPI’s research is directed toward the formulation and implementation of local and national healthcare policies.

With extensive investigator experience in both the public and private sectors, MTPPI’s staff designs, implements, and conducts a full range of healthcare research and technology development activities. Our staff includes statisticians, epidemiologists, economists, programmers, biomedical engineers, and policy analysts. We specialize in using big data to conduct real-time, real-world studies that are both affordable and useful for healthcare stakeholders.

Dennis Cotter - President

Mr. Cotter serves as the President of MTPPI. He is an experienced outcomes-investigator and was one of the first healthcare researchers to use large scale computer arrays to analyze electronic healthcare claims data. His work appears in top-tier medical journals and has influenced international clinical organizations, US Congressional legislation, and CMS policy. He has been cited by leading medical publications and mass media outlets. Mr. Cotter is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the Institute.

Dr. Mae Thamer - Research Director

Dr. Thamer is responsible for leading MTPPI’s research program. She has extensive healthcare research experience dating back over three decades, with a particular expertise in using big data to improve outcomes for patients with chronic conditions. Dr. Thamer has conducted numerous large scale studies on renal failure (CKD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), diabetes, lupus, and other chronic conditions. Dr. Thamer is particularly interested in the analysis of emerging healthcare technologies and research methods.
