Site design philosophy...
The organization and operations of this site were built with the intention of getting the most appropriate information into the hands of the user as quickly as possible in a way that provides for the efficient and easy navigation of the site. The hierarchy was kept very low and the information is organized in small and relevant units. Images were used sparingly and kept as lean as possible. The entire package for the active image map takes only 13k, including the HTML, the java class, and the graphics and only needs to be downloaded once.
Our intention is to fulfill the dissemination of information aspects of the Institute's mission by using the web to the full extent possible given the state of commonly accessible technology. We have also made every effort to insure that our pages are fully accessible to all browsers and platforms from Lynx to Navigator on the Macintosh, though the layout and aesthetics are optimized for MS IE 3.01.
Technical facts...
This page is served on a DEC Prioris HX, Pentium Pro 200 running NT Server 4.0 with IIS 3.0. Page design and HTML coding was done with FrontPage97. Internet Explorer 3.0 is the browser of choice, though the site was designed to be navigable and usable, if not pretty, for every browser from Lynx through Navigator.
All graphics are custom. Some source material was drawn from Barry's Clip Art Server. Software used for these includes CorelDraw 4.0 and 7.0 for the layout and object sketches, JASC's PaintShop Pro 4.0 Beta, Corel's PhotoPaint 7.0 and Alchemy Mindworks' GIF Construction set for the GIF issues, including paletizing and animation. Some source material was also drawn from the clip art included with CorelDraw.
All applets and scripting were developed in-house in Javascript for the client-side and in VBScript for use with Microsoft Active Server Pages on the server side. The active image map in the left hand frame was developed using MS Visual J++.
Questions, comments and criticisms are welcomed by the webmaster.
