Increasing medical innovation has led to the development of competing medical and surgical technologies to treat a given condition or illness. Furthermore, financial incentives may influence the adoption and use of these new technologies. Often, these technologies are not compared with the existing standard of practice prior to their approval and adoption. To address this gap, patient outcome studies examine the consequences of competing medical technologies on patients in terms of clinical outcome, including morbidity, mortality, and functional status. MTPPI's research includes:
- Assessing treatments including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, biotechnologies, and surgical and medical interventions
- Utilizing appropriate clinical measures to assess the differential impact of selected technologies on the risk of morbidity and mortality
- Identifying relevant sociodemographic and clinical variables to permit case-mix adjustment to standardize study findings
- Examining patient compliance with the recommended treatment program
- Identifying the effect of financial and nonfinancial barriers to access to health care
- Developing clinical practice guidelines for both providers and consumers
