National Nursing Home Survey 1985: Micro-data Tape

The 1985 National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS) is a nationwide sample survey of nursing homes, their residents, and registered nurses, conducted by NCHS from August 1985 to January 1986. The 1985 NNHS covered all types of nursing and related care homes which provided some level of nursing care in the conterminous U.S. The survey was conducted via a combination of personal interviews, self-enumerated forms, and medical record abstractions. The various data files included on the tape contain data: on nursing home operating and utilization characteristics; on facility financial characteristics; from medical records on a sample of patients; and, on registered nurses. In 1985, there were approximately 5243 current residents, 6023 discharges, and 2763 registered nurses responding from the 1079 homes that participated in the survey.
